The Sacred Heart of Cholet

Visiting Cholet means admiring its Sacred Heart. Perched on the hill along Boulevard Guy Chouteau, the Sacred Heart of Cholet stands out with its 45-meter height and distinctive architecture.

This Romano-Byzantine building, directly inspired by the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Montmartre, captivates visitors with its frescoes and mosaics.

Built to affirm Cholet’s identity, it also pays tribute to key historical events, notably the famous “Battle of Cholet” in 1793.

Every architectural detail seems to carry meaning, such as the gargoyles caricaturing Hitler and Mussolini — a clear reflection of the desire to convey powerful messages through the building.

And for those wishing to extend the experience, climbing the 132 steps to the carillon rewards visitors with a stunning panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.

Textile Expertise in Cholet

The textile heritage of Cholet is deeply tied to its identity, having profoundly shaped the city’s history and development. Known by the evocative nickname “City of the Handkerchief”, it was for decades a major center for producing these famous fabric squares, before paper handkerchiefs took over.
To keep this industrial memory alive, the Textile and Fashion Museum opened its doors in 1995 in a former bleaching factory. Visitors can experience demonstrations on authentic looms, showcasing the precise techniques and craftsmanship of the past.

The Oriental Park of Maulévrier

With its two slender white spires, elegant and graceful, the Notre-Dame Church of Cholet stands as a true historical gem. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1999, it traces its origins back to the 11th century, when a simple chapel was first built on this site.

As you draw closer, take a moment to observe the gargoyles adorning the side façades: these enigmatic figures, both decorative and protective, add a touch of mystery to the site.

The Cholet Museum of Art and History

The Cholet Museum of Art and History invites visitors on a journey through time, blending the region's heritage and artistic expression.

Throughout the rooms, the Wars of the Vendée are recounted alongside broader exhibitions. Paintings, sculptures, period tapestries… each piece helps to trace the city’s history while paying tribute to the artists who have shaped its identity.

Opened in 1993 in a building with contemporary architecture, the museum also showcases the evolution of art from the 16th century to the present day, in a continuous dialogue between past and present.

Additionally, a section dedicated to regional history, from the Gallo-Roman period to the early 20th century, provides a deeper understanding of the cultural roots of Cholet and its surroundings.

The Cholet Battlefield Park

Visiting Cholet also means discovering the Cholet Battlefield Park. Also known as Mont-Ligot, it is much more than just a natural area: it is a memorial site, deeply rooted in the city’s history.

Overlooking the old industrial districts, this hill was the scene of a decisive clash between Republicans and Royalists at the end of the 18th century.

Today, this emotionally charged site can be explored on foot. A marked trail leads you through a mosaic of landscapes. The ascent takes you to the viewpoint, the highest point of the route, where you can better understand the strategic significance of the battle while enjoying the scenery.
