A true icon of the city, this 13th-century fortress impresses with its 17 massive towers and formidable defensive appearance. But behind its austere walls lies a priceless treasure. Indeed, a unique masterpiece of medieval art stretching over 100 meters long, discover the Apocalypse Tapestry, exquisitely illustrating the biblical text of Saint John.

However, the Château d’Angers is not just about its tapestry. As you stroll along the ramparts, you’ll enjoy a 360° panoramic view of Angers, the Maine River, and the historic Doutre district. Be sure to visit the gardens too! The castle’s hanging gardens also hold delightful surprises, featuring medicinal and aromatic plants inspired by medieval traditions.

Also, don’t miss the Bout du Monde Walk just outside the castle—one of the best viewpoints overlooking Angers.

The Maison d’Adam, an Open-Air Sculptural Masterpiece

Right in the heart of the historic center, on the charming Place Sainte-Croix, stands the Maison d’Adam, one of the most beautiful examples of 15th-century timber-framed architecture. Classified as a historic monument, this medieval house fascinates and enchants visitors with its richly carved façade, a true open-air art gallery.

Among the most famous figures, don’t miss the renowned Tricouillard, a grimacing character who inevitably draws attention and delights both young and old. Once home to a wealthy family from Angers, the house is now a vibrant place. In fact, it houses the House of Artisans, where you can discover unique local creations (ceramics, jewelry, textiles, décor, and more).

Although the house is not open to visitors inside, its façade alone is well worth the visit. It’s a must-stop photo opportunity during your stroll through old Angers!

La Collégiale Saint-Martin : un voyage au cœur de 15 siècles d’histoire

The Collegiate Church of Saint-Martin is one of the best-preserved Carolingian monuments in France. Originally built in the 5th century, this church has stood the test of time, offering a unique insight into the evolution of architecture, from Romanesque to Anjou Gothic styles.
